May 1st Update

What haven't I been up to this month? I've been in Seattle. Writing. Drawing. Knitting. Shipping books. Comic Festing. Making pies.

It was so lovely to get to travel for so long, but I must say that it has felt so good to be in relatively one place, to see my community here who I love so much, and to just breathe a bit.

Well, except for the stopping to breathe a bit. I have been so non-stop busy. But for good or bad, this worked well for my monthly experimental comic. I will be doing a strip a day about my life (in diary form) for the month of May. Along the lines of American Elf kind of thing. Probably some Eddie Campbell influence. Just snippets. All true (as true as memory can be), except I'll be changing most or all names. Not necessarily funny. They may change tone as I go along and discover more what I like to do with them.

For the first one, I wrote a diary of my entire day, and then re-read it a few times to decide which snippet I most wished to draw. For now, I think that is a good approach. Oh, and it will always run two days behind, because I live the first day, write and draw it the second day, and then it gets posted that night for the day after that.

You'll be able to see them daily as i post them on baldwinpage.com at 6:00 a.m. NYC time, or you can watch as I post them here at livejournal each day after I wake up and get computer access. They'll also be archived on Water Street.

Day 1 (p.s. octopuspie).

Yes! Though I am barely a knitter at all.

And that's right, you're not on the Dee feed. I mentioned knitting, and linked to you, in my last post here or here.

Oh wow! I feel so special. And yes, darling, I'm going to Rhinebeck this year with some of the women down here. :) So I'll be there.

If you like the handspun, let me know... I'm starting to spin up a lot more than I'll EVER, ever use.

My friend Jen just gave me her very first handspun, which means it verrrrry rough, i can't wait to try it.

I should be out that way by then, I'll try to swing by NY. :)

I love spinning - almost more than knitting! I've been working hard towards getting a fairly consistent sock yarn, and I'm getting closer, but I'm still not *quite* there. There are all kinds of pics of my fiber and yarn here if ya wanna peek. :-D It's ridiculously addicting. I'm going to be like a kid in a candy store at Rhinebeck... I'm seriously bringing an empty suitcase so the fiber/yarn haul has a way to get home with me.

A comic about me, sheep and nutella sounds like something erika would come up with!

Sorry for disfiguring your beautiful comic =p

Your disfigurement is beautiful, matt. Although you conveniently forgot to add yourself in there. :)

This is really cute! I really like your self-portrait. It reads as you, yet is simple enough to allow that reader identification thing Scott McCloud is always on about.

I can't wait until you start drawing your more depressing moments of binge-drinking, porn-surfing and masturbation. Panel one: Drink. Panel two: Drink some more. Panel three: Porn. Panel four: Guilty orgasm.

You captured the immortal essence of your sideburns.

The danger here is, your friends (or do I mean me?) are going to start planning wacky adventures to take you on so you'll write about them that day.

Actually, if we want to get all serious on this. This morning I wrote a long diary of what i did yesterday. And aside from a few conversations (albeit lovely ones), i did nothing but draw from wakey to sleepy. What do I do with that kind of content?

Maybe this piece has a reverse intended effect. Maybe it will make me look at each day, and say, am I gonna let another day slip by with nothing but work? or another day go by without slowing down to observe some things?

The latter sounds better. Hopefully this will slow me down and make me pay a bit more attention.

And not to criticize yesterday. I really frikkin love my work. And I've been very social, just in spurts.

Hmm. Thoughts.

Well, that was the exact reason I started an LJ account - to think of a day in terms of stories, both to practice my writing style and to observe and remember my life better. I think it's really worked on both accounts. I believe I even tried the daily comic thing too (probably inspired by James Kochalka), but it just doesn't come easily enough to me to keep it up.

So... what should we get up to... parade through the streets of Olympia dressed as rock stars? No, wait, that was last weekend...
