stupid stupid stupid
sigh. Livejournal, why'd you gotta go south.

We all came here because the policies made it a safe place to build a community, and now it isn't, and I feel trapped here because it's where my community is.

I just spent the last hour or so readin about the whole thing. I'll do the strike at least. Ugh.

Stupid.

You are one of the reasons why, despite spending the cash for a permanent account, i haven't moved over the insanejournal yet. If you did, so would I. and if all the other webcomics people did, a lot of people who watch them here would move over there. I wish I could get my money's worth here at sup's livejournal demokrazy, but that just isn't going to be happening any time soon.

I wouldn't be adverse to moving onto new blogging pastures myself - it's just a matter of finding a community-friendly blogging tool that hasn't already been swamped by embarrassingly emo bastards.

I thought blogging was for embarrassingly emo bastards! I mean, that's why I do it.

That being said, I'm considering vox.com.

I got an instant ice-cream headache looking at that thread. Lots of noise, not much information.

My understanding is that there is no such thing as an ad-free 'free' account, if you sign up after March, 2008. Yes?

Correct, but that is apparently not all of the current hullabaloo.

MKB's right, there's More to the sticky situation.

They also filtered out various sexual terms, depression, fanfic and some other things from their popular interests page. Then they... said it was a mistake, then it was noted further filters were added, and they were denied as being added. And Livejournal only took out the filters after many days of outcry.

It just seemed they were trying to "clean things up" and have nobody notice, and then pretend to ignore it until they couldn't, and then deny it. And I don't want things 'cleaned up" here, I want all of my friends to feel welcome and accepted. And with this behavior, and not even acknowledgement hardly let alone apology, I can't but help imagine they will continue trying to do this.

Running a community is tricky. You attract new people, without offending the old ones. Someone has to pay for the salaries of the guys running stuff.

I don't envy people in that business.

The only 'stupid stupid stupid' response to all this would be a one-day strike/boycott.

Check out [info]grayhawkfh's rant here. Salient points:
  • "One day boycotts and the like do nothing from a business standpoint. They won't even notice. Barely a statistical blip on the radar. If you really have a problem with LiveJournal/SUP, you have other options. Use them."
  • "No one's basic account was changed. They made a business decision to not offer these accounts anymore. As has been stated before, heaven forbid a for-profit business makes a profit."
  • "When I did have an issue, I called them on it, and so did many others. They fixed it. And to those who are claiming that their explanation was shady, I remind you that I have a general policy to not assume malice where stupidity will suffice. Until shown proof that someone did this with malice, then I will assume that their explanation is valid."

Thanks! But I disagree my action to be stupid stupid stupid.

Expressing a point of view to be heard, even when you know it will not necessarily result in any immediate action, I think is worthy. it lets it be known the values of it's users, which they were ignoring.

Most change, like in politics, happens in the middle. Radicals on one side don't usually change things, but they help gravitate the middle. They keep important things in the debate.

I think the fact that the latest LJ "news" post got 5,000 responses (the maximum) also helped send the message.

I'm doing the strike, and refusing to open my LJ that day. Page views are more likely to show up on their radar than a mere lack of content, although the lack of content has a certain poetical justice aspect to it, since that's the part they're impinging upon.

I don't think it's going to be all that effective, actually, but I see no reason not to support it.

Since posting that, I've read more pro-strike and anti-strike posts, and I do agree that LJ/SUP (mostly SUP) has done some things in the wrong.. I just doubt that a content strike will even be noticed in raw numbers. Say every one of those 5000 commenters (assuming unique, which is an overstatement) participates, well.. as of this moment, over 194K people have updated in the last 24 hours.

I hear you. If it were raw numbers, it might not be noticed. And it won't likely effect any immediate change.

But I still will be doing it. I don't think the actual numbers will likely matter (thought they might be noticed, who knows), but it's already big enough that they're aware of it and I've done my best to read google's attempt to translate an interview with them in Russian), in which they seem to have already called it blackmail tactics, and they won't acknowledge it because then they'd be rewarding the behavior.

Which is just fuel to he fire for me. To me, a strike to stand up for and represent my community who I feel they were attempting to marginalize, is not blackmail.

Anyhow. whew. Getting a wee bit heavy here. Sorry about that. :)

I am such crap at summarizing. And I read about it HOURS ago. How can you possibly expect me to remember that?

The responses I gave above give some sense of it. Sorry. If someone else who's a better summarizer wants to step in, please do.
