the colts survive...
So, Little Dee Vol. 2 was reviewed in the Washington Post today, as the single example of the "next wave" of classic comics. Brushing shoulders with such brilliance as McCay's Rarebit Fiend and Schulz's Peanuts.

A good way to start a Sunday morning. :)

It makes me ponder again why Little Dee was not syndicated. But that's behind me, and if anything it kinda makes me laugh these days, despite the inner-child craving to whinge.

(Linus Christmas parody here, btw.)

Well, I'm back in the states. Well, for this week anyway. The sun is shining, and I have strips do draw. Well, as soon as I finish my tea.

It wasn't syndicated because comic syndicate editors are like fat, cautious, spayed old tomcats who are in pursuit, not of excellence, but of least objectionable content. And Little Dee is excellence.

I've long thought that Little Dee's not being syndicated is indicative of the fundamental failure of the newspaper comics system. Looking at some crappy comics that are still in the newspaper suggests that the system is bad, but doesn't prove it because who knows if there's actually anything better trying to be syndicated. But that Little Dee is so good, and not only good but well suited for the format and audience, and that you actively tried to syndicate it, suggests that the system is completely broken.

Man, I do not know why it wasn't syndicated. Between the festering corpses of ancient comics tended by funerary acolytes of long-dead creators and the frantic search for "edgy" new comics to bring in readers under 85, there seems to be very little room for Good.

It's a damn shame, but I'm glad you've moved past it, and I hope you keep going with the strip in its current distribution format for a good long while.

i am personally glad it din't get syndicated 'cause it would have been selling the strip & yourself short. Syndications only want homogenous don't-have-to-think & safe stuff these days.

Echoes of the sentiments above. I feel like the syndicate services also find it cheaper to keep raping the vaults of dead and beloved artists than to begin paying new ones. In any case, sounds like you're on a path of progress, and that's good. I hope one day I can see your comic books on the shelves of major book stores and say, "I knew him when he was drawing pictures of naked ladies with men's names."

Glad you made it home safe!
